Getting To Know the Holy Spirit

Getting to know the Holy Spirit

John 16:5-13

We have discussed and preached about getting to know God; last week we talked about knowing Jesus, and today I would like us to get to know the Holy Spirit better.  Part of knowing God is knowing the persons in which he is revealed.  There are so many stereotypes when it comes to the Holy Spirit.  If you talk too much about him some people think you are charismatic.  Some think that to have the Holy Spirit is to shout, speak in tongues or fall backward when pushed by the preacher.  In some churches you hardly hear about the Holy Spirit; he is the forgotten God that Francis Chan talks about in his book.

The Holy Spirit is God.(the 3rd person of the God-head); The Holy Spirit is not “it” He is God with all the attributes of deity. Co-equal with the Father and the Son.

He is not a divine influence, not a ghost or a concept.  He is a person who possess a will, intellect and emotions.

The Bible calls him:
the Spirit of God (Gn.1:2)
the Spirit of the LORD (Judges 3:10)
 The Holy Spirit (Luke 1:35)
The Spirit of Jesus. (Acts 16:7, Php.1:19)
The Spirit of truth (John 14: 17; 16:13)

The Advocate (Counselor, Helper, Comforter) John 14:16
We are introduced to the Spirit in Genesis 1:2  The Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.

In the Old Testament God’s Spirit empowered certain individuals for service.  God gifted people in order to work and build things for the tabernacle He told Moses to build.  Ex.31:2-5, Ex.35:31

The Holy Spirit empowered the judges of Israel so they would accomplish God’s purposes.  “The Spirit of the LORD came upon…”

Judges 6:34 (Gideon against the Midianites)  The Spirit of the LORD clothed Gideon.

Judges 11:29 (Jephthah, he fought the Ammonites)

Judges 13:25, 14:6-19 (Samson’s strength).

The Spirit empowered prophets to speak.

Elijah and Elisha  (I kings 18:12)

Isaiah Isa.48:16

Ezekiel (Ez.2:1-3)

The Holy Spirit is the author of prophecy.  2 Peter 1:20-21 Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation.  For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
All Scripture is God-breathed (2 Tim.3:16).  Given by God, breathed out by God himself.

The Holy Spirit would also empower the Messiah during his earthly ministry.  Isaiah 61

Jesus read this portion of Scripture at a synagogue in Nazareth.  Luke 4:14-21

Jesus let the crowd know that he was the expected Messiah.

The Holy Spirit was involved in Jesus’ birth. (Luke 1:35.  The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.)

At Jesus’ baptism.  Luke 3:21-22; Mark 1:9-11; Matthew 3:13-17.

Jesus commanded his followers to baptize in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. (Matt.28:19-20)

The Holy Spirit in the world now!  John 14:15-17, 25 // John 16:5-16

The Spirit of Truth.

To be with Christ’s followers forever.  HE will live in the believers.

Sent by the Father (v.26) HE will teach Christ’s people the things taught by Jesus himself.

John 16:5-16

It would be better for Christ’s disciples if Jesus leaves so the Holy Spirit would come. (v6-) Jesus would send the Spirit (v.7)

The Holy Spirit convicts the world of sin, righteousness and judgment. He is working in the world making people aware of their sinful attitudes, and what is right and wrong, He is working in the world letting them know that judgment is coming.

He will guide God’s people into all truth.

This is the era of the Spirit; Christ’s people have been empowered to represent him here on earth.  Even while we announce Christ’s message to people The Spirit is the one working on people’s heart doing the convicting and proving the veracity of Christ’s teaching.

Imaging now; God himself living in the believers and through them.

Paul calls the Holy Spirit the down payment of our inheritance.

The Spirit is the pledge, down payment God has given us that we will inherit what God has promised us.  Eph.1:14; 2 Cor.1:22

God lives in his people now through His Spirit.  Greater is He who is in us, than he who is in the world.  Jesus promised to be with us forever Matt.28:20.  Even though he is not physically with us, his presence, his Spirit lives in us.

I john 4:1-4 1Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.    2This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God,    3but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world.   4You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.
