The Biblical Reality Of Hell Part2

The Biblical Reality of Hell – Part 2

We began talking about a teaching that has also been attacked by some in the evangelical circle.  The teaching of hell has been removed by some churches who professed a universal theology. (Universalism: At the end everyone will be saved)  Others believe hell exists but that it won’t be eternal.  We looked at what Jesus said about hell and we discovered that Hell is a real place created for the devil and his angels; we also found out that the wicked will go there.  Jesus described it as an eternal place.  Today we will look at other passages which will give us a better understanding about hell as portrayed in the Bible.

Hell is an awful place.  The Bible warns people so they don’t go there.  Described as eternal fire, place of punishment.
Matt.5:22 in danger of the fire of hell; Mark 9:43-48 9 // Matt. 18:9 And if your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled than with two hands to go to hell to the unquenchable fire.  45 And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life lame than with two feet to be thrown into hell. 47And if your eye causes you to sin, tear it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into hell, 48‘where their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched.’ 49For everyone will be salted with fire

Rev.19:20  The beast and the false prophets were thrown into the fiery lake of burning sulfur.

Hell is Eternal separation from God.  The 2nd death!
Rev.20:10-15  The devil will be thrown into the lake of burning sulfur.  To be tormented day and night forever and ever.  (v.14)Death and hades were also thrown in the lake of fire and those whose names were not written in the book of life.

The lake of fire is the 2nd death (20:14; 21:7-8)
Death came into the world as a result of sin; death is the penalty for our sin  Rom.5:12 Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people because all sinned.  Rom.6:23 For the wages for sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
We see death and experience death because of the sin in the world.  This is physical death, hell is called the 2nd death (spiritually dead, separated forever from God, from good, justice, holiness, compassion, mercy)
Chuck Missler said.  “If you are born once, you will die twice, but if you are born twice, you will die once.

The text in revelation says that people whose names were not written in the book of life were thrown in hellIs your name written in the book of life?  How do you get your name written in the book of life?  You must be born again. This is how you can escape hell.
No body has to go to hell.  There is a way of escape!

This is what Jesus told Nicodemus, you must be born of the water and the Spirit.  When someone comes to Christ through faith, that person makes a transition from death into life.  That person is known as a new creation.  Scripture teaches us that there is not condemnation for those who are in Christ (Rom.8:1)  In order to be in Christ, you must receive him as Lord.  Jesus is the solution God sent to give people a chance to live with him.

God provided the way of escaping hell.
John 3:16-17
John 20:30-31 | By believing in Jesus one can have life.
Rom 5:1-2 |  It’s only through Jesus that you can satisfy the demands of God; you have peace with God and stand on his grace.

La Guardia story written by Brennan Manning; The Regamuffin Gospel.  1990
January 1935 La Guardia dismissed the judge for the evening and took over the bench himself within a few minutes, an old lady was brought before him, charged with stealing a loaf of bread.  She told LaGuardia that her husband had left her and her daughter was sick at home, the grandkids were starving.  But the shopkeeper, from whom the bread was stolen, refused to drop the charges. “It’s a real bad neighborhood, your honor.”  The man told the mayor.  “She’s got to be punished to teach other people around here a lesson.”  LaGuardia sighed.  He turned to the woman and said: ‘I’ve got to punish you.  The law makes no exceptions-ten dollars or ten days in jail.”  But even as he pronounced sentence, the mayor was already reaching into his pocket.  He extracted a bill and tossed it into his famous sombrero saying.  “Here is the ten dollar fine which I now remit”

What LaGuardia did for that poor lady, Jesus did for us; he paid the price we could not pay, he paid so that we don’t be punished in hell.  Jesus made it possible that you and I don’t be punished in hell; he paid the price with his own blood to redeem us, to free us.  You see at the right time, when we were powerless, Christ died for us to redeem us (Rom.5:6) Thank God for his amazing grace.
