Exploring God
Romans 1:18-20
Maybe you have seen the TV show by Morgan Freeman, “The story of God” For centuries people have wrestled with the question is there a God out there? How do you even know that God exists? Is there evidence out there to the existence of God? If the skeptics would consider the evidence they would know that God exists and that He wanted people to know him. So if you doubt his existence, he welcomes you to examine the evidence that point to himself. You can get to know this God, not just know about him.
Scripture tells us that what is known about God is plain or visible, it’s evident.
Rom.1:18-23
Rom.1:18 God’s wrath is revealed from heaven against the wickedness and injustice of men. Sin makes God angry; sin is shown in suppressing the truth. “For what may be known about God is plain to them because God has made it plain to them”
How has God made this clear or obvious? V.20 Since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities –his eternal power, divine nature have been clearly seen. You can see evidence of God clearly in what has been created. Creation points to God. Theologians and scholars call this “Natural revelation” (God revealing himself through nature).
King David knew that when you look at creation, there is evidence of God. Ps.19:1-3. The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge. There is no speech, nor are there words, whose voice is not heard. (ESV) The heavens are telling us something every day. They tell us how glorious and big God is.
Ps.97:6 The heavens proclaim his righteousness and all the peoples see his glory.
Isaiah 40:25-26 To whom will you compare me? Or who is my equal says the Holy One. Lift your eyes and look to the heavens: who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one and calls them each by name. Because of his great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing.
Look up to the heavens. Isaiah could see all the stars and God says “I know each star by name.” Today with the technological advancements we have we can see pass our atmosphere. Scientists are stunned and just give us an estimation as to the billions of stars out there. They have found new galaxies. One called the Grand Design spiral Galaxy because of its intricacy.
Where there is design or pattern, there has to be a designer.
When you look at picture, you know there was a painter. A building has an architect.
We know that nothing is designed by chance.
Design has to have a designer because order doesn’t happen by chance. Ex. Clean your room; don’t do anything to your room to see if with time it will eventually clean itself. Nothing will happen by chance, but it will happen by will.
To design and create something takes three things:
-Intelligence, -free will, -power
Intelligence, free will and power are characteristics of a person. God is a personal being. He is not a force or thing.
-Natural laws don’t have free will.
If we have laws then we have a law maker or law giver.
The law of Inertia proves there is a God.
Objects in motion stay in motion unless acted upon by an outside force. Objects not in motion remain without motion unless acted upon by an outside force.
There has to be an existence greater than ours because by laws of this creation it could not have started itself. In other words, there has to be an original force, something beyond creation for creation to even exist. The creator is greater than creation, just as a designer is greater than the design.
God’s has given people ample evidence of who He is. God has displayed his character and attributes in what he created so that people are without excuse. People have no excuse when they refuse to believe in God.
Humans have a conscience. Their conscience tells them God exists. God’s eternal power and divine nature have been clearly seen –being understood from what has been made.(v, 20)
God left evidence for humans who can understand and reason. We have a conscience and the plans and animals don’t.
Conscience: (Webster’s) The part of your mind that makes you aware of your actions as being either morally right or wrong.
Morality requires God: right and wrong require a God to legislate. Where there is law, there has to be a law giver.
-Every human culture has a sense of right and wrong; every culture has some common shared values. Why? Because God placed that in their lives; God created us unique, in his image, we can reason, we can know what is right and wrong, we can create and design things.
“If there is no God, Hitler was not wrong nor evil in what he did. But there is a God.” Kendal Faul
Those who still reject God; those who don’t believe he exists are without excuse since God gave them plenty of evidence outside and even within themselves to know him. Romans 1:21-23
Are you still not sure about God? If people don’t believe in God today is because they consciously don’t want to consider the evidence, which God himself has made plain to them.
People won’t have any excuse when God pours out his wrath on those who reject him and refuse to believe in him.
God exists and has left you plenty of evidence all around us, so that we could know him.
