When Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt, they traveled through the desert where they endured hunger and thirst. However, Yahweh continually provided for them. Just in the previous chapter we read about an incident in which they came to a place where there was no water. People grumbled against Moses; God provided water to drink from a rock. These people were on their way to the land the LORD promised to them as their inheritance. This land would be their future; however, an enemy came against them and threatened their lives, their future. This is the first war Israel had to fight after coming out of Egypt.
Lots of people in our nation suffer from identity crisis. Some don’t even know who they are anymore. They may not be happy with who they are and spend lots of money in search of becoming someone they would like to be. For a lot of people their identity is tied to their jobs, careers, looks, fame, money, spouse, sexual preference, etc. If your identity is tied to your job, then when you lose your job, you lose your identity; the same if you built your identity on your spouse, when he or she is gone, you will have an identity crisis.
God was ready to fulfill his promise to Abraham of freeing his people from slavery and embarking them on the journey to the Land he promised to give to them. God sent Moses to Pharaoh with the command to let his people go, but Pharaoh didn’t listen. God had sent nine plagues or catastrophes to Egypt; through these plagues God showed his power humiliating the Egyptian gods. The LORD told Moses he was going to send a final plague on all the land of Egypt. However, God provides deliverance, he gave instructions to Moses for the people to follow and escape his judgment.
Some people struggle with their own identity. People’s identity may be tied to their career, accomplishments in life, spouse, parents, looks, etc. A person whose identity is connected to their job or career may suffer an identity crisis when they lose their job.

The Bible tells us of people who experienced identity crisis in their lives. However, these people were used by God in mighty ways, once they got passed their struggles with whom they were.
